On December 1, 2020, the world will celebrate its seventh annual Giving Tuesday. Now’s the time to make plans to join the fun.

A Short History of Giving Tuesday

Founded in 2012, Giving Tuesday was created to encourage people to harness the power of positivity to do some collective good.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

On this day, people around the world give generously of their time, attention, energies, and resources for the benefit of their surrounding communities. It’s estimated that in 2019 alone, Giving Tuesday resulted in over $511M in online donations, 201 community campaigns, and 60 country-wide movements.

This year, make sure you don’t miss out.

Some Ways to Participate

If you’re looking to get involved in Giving Tuesday, know that this year is likely to look a bit different. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, some local, in-person service projects that would typically be held on this day might take new and different forms.

If you’re considering a local, neighborly service project, be sure to consider the health and safety of others. Wear masks, stay socially distanced, and respect others’ safety measures.

That being said, even during a pandemic, there is still a myriad of ways to get involved.

  • Participating in outdoor, socially distanced cleanup projects
  • Checking out opportunities to volunteer from home
  • Dropping off donations to shelters and food banks
  • Donating to online fundraising campaigns

With the pandemic wreaking havoc on the nonprofit sector and person-to-person interactions quite risky, online donations may just be one of the safest and most effective ways to celebrate Giving Tuesday in 2020.
